It took more than 35 years for celebrated horror author Stephen King to pen a sequel to his 1977 novel The Shining - a book famously adapted into one of the greatest horror movies of all time by none other than Stanley Kubrick - but in 2013 he finally delivered a follow-up, Doctor Sleep, which finds young Danny Torrance all grown-up and still wrestling with the traumatic events he experienced at the Overlook Hotel.

Thankfully, a film adaptation of King's sequel hasn't taken quite as long to emerge and this week Doctor Sleep sees Danny return to the big screen to face his demons.
Mike Flanagan, the man behind last year's excellent Netflix horror series The Haunting of Hill House, is directing the sequel, which stars Ewan McGregor as the adult Danny Torrance alongside a cast that also features Rebecca Ferguson, Star Trek's Bruce Greenwood, Alias star Carl Lumbly, and an outstanding big-screen debut for young actress Kyleigh Curran.
The latter plays a young girl named Abra Stone, whose psychic gifts are even more powerful than those Danny has been suppressing all these years, largely through the excessive consumption of alcohol. However, when it emerges that a shadowy organisation known as the True Knot is capturing and feeding on children with psychic abilities, Danny is forced to confront his fears in order to save the girl from their nefarious clutches.
